TIFFIN, OHIO – The Northwood University baseball team dropped a 16-8 contest to Tiffin Thursday afternoon (April 17).
Northwood stands at 12-20 overall, 4-14 in the GLIAC. Tiffin is 10-26 overall, 9-10 in the GLIAC.
The Timberwolves got off to a good start in the game, going up 3-0 in the third inning. Dustin Lee (Mt. Pleasant, Mich.) put NU on the board with an RBI double in the second inning and later scored on an Andrew Fleming (Olivet, Mich./Kellogg CC) single.
Tiffin responded with three runs in the third, but the Timberwolves responded with two runs in the fourth. Travis Smith (Clare, Mich.) had an RBI single to put Northwood back on top 4-3. Zyke Bailey (Taylor, Mich./H.S. Truman) then had an RBI groundout to make the score 5-3.
The Dragons offense took over in the fifth and sixth inning, scoring six runs to go up 9-5. But the Timberwolves fought back once again in the seventh inning, plating three runs. Justin Zyvon (Sterling Heights, Mich./Macomb CC) had an RBI double, which was followed by NU scoring runs on a passed ball and a wild pitch to get back to within one run at 9-8.
Just as Northwood was getting back into the game, Tiffin responded. After the Dragons scored one in the seventh, Tiffin plating six runs to round out the scoring.
Tiffin finished the game with a 16-11 advantage in hits. Neither team played well defensively in the game, as the two teams combined for 14 errors (Tiffin – 8, Northwood – 6) and four passed balls (two each).
Cody Rogers (Saginaw, Mich./Swan Valley) and Lee each finished 2-4 with two runs scored. Zyvon had a pair of hits a run scored and an RBI.
The two teams will play a doubleheader Thursday (April 18). First pitch is set for Noon.
