Softball Sweeps Doubleheader At Malone
CANTON, OHIO – The Northwood University softball team swept a doubleheader at Malone Monday afternoon (March 31). Northwood claimed a 2-0 win in game one before posting a 6-1 win in game two.
Northwood is now 11-7 overall, 2-0 in the GLIAC. Malone stands at 8-8-1 overall, 0-2 in the GLIAC.
Game one was scoreless heading into the fifth inning when the Timberwolves put together a two-out rally. After Ashley Lynn a single, Jessica Tostrud (Kenosha, Wisc./Mary D. Bradford) had an RBI triple to put Northwood up 1-0. Northwood then made it 2-0 in the next at-bat thanks to an RBI double by Lindsay Obremski (DuBois, Pa./Dubois). Malone had chances over the final three innings, but junior pitcher Maddison Sebald (Bay City, Mich./Western) held the Pioneers off the scoreboard. She allowed eight hits in seven innings of work while striking out four to improve to 6-2 on the season. Obremski had two hits in the game, while Tostrud had a hit, a run scored and an RBI.
In game two, Northwood got on the board in the second inning with a pair of runs. Lauren Look (Pinconning, Mich./Cleveland State) had a sacrifice fly to put NU up 1-0. The next batter Natalie Lampman (Madison Heights, Mich./Bishop Foley) made the score 2-0 on an RBI single. Malone bounced back with a run in the top of the third inning to cut the lead to 2-1.
The score was still 2-1 in the sixth when Northwood pitcher Casey Brown (Hudson, Ohio) got out of a jam to maintain the Timberwolves lead. Malone loaded the bases with two outs thanks to a single and two walks, but Brown ended the threat with a strikeout.
Northwood then broke the game open in the bottom of the sixth, plating four runs. Obremski hit a one-out homer to make the score 3-1. After a Stacey Klonowski (Canton, Mich./Plymouth) double, Tostrud brought her home with a run-scoring single. Look then put the game away with a two-run homer to round out the scoring. Tostrud finished the game 3-3 with a double, two runs scored and an RBI. Look added three RBIs. Brown earned the win in the circle, striking out eight while allowing one run to improve to 4-3.
Northwood will travel to Ashland for a doubleheader Tuesday (April 1). First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
