The Northwood University women's soccer team defeated No. 15 Gannon University 1-0 this afternoon (October 18) breaking GU's nine-match home winning streak.
Northwood improves to 4-7-1 overall, 3-5 in the GLIAC. The Golden Knights fall to 8-4-1 overall.
Neither team held an advantage in the first half, which ended scoreless. With only five shots taken by each team, Northwood was able to edge the Golden Knights in corner kicks 3-0.
The second half was a different story. Gannon was able to get off 10 shots to Northwood's four in the second 45, but the only one that mattered was off the foot of NU senior Allie Misner (Macomb, Mich./Eisenhower). Savannah King (Lapeer, Mich. / West) took the initial shot on an open net but was saved by a Gannon defender. Misner followed on the rebound to net the game-winner at 57:58 for her second career Northwood goal.
Gannon finished the contest with 15 shots to Northwood's nine, while Northwood edged in corner kicks 4-3 for the match. Freshman keeper Samantha Cook (South Lyon, Mich. / South Lyon East) tallied six saves on the day.
