The Northwood University women's soccer team traveled to Saginaw Valley and fell 5-3 on Friday afternoon (October 25).
The Timberwolves fall to 5-8-1 on the season, 4-6 in the GLIAC. The Cardinals improve to 5-8-1 and 3-7 in the GLIAC.
Saginaw Valley got off to an early lead, netting the first goal of the match at 12:34. The Cardinals extended their in the lead in the 18th minute off a header from the six yard line off a cross. NU got on the board less than a minute later on a team effort. Punching the ball across the goal line was Allie Misner (Macomb, Mich./Eisenhower) after the keeper went down and there were multiple attempts within the six. Saginaw Valley edged Northwood in shots for the first half 7-5, while the Timberwolves held the advantage in corner kicks 2-0.
The Cardinals extended their lead netting three additional goals less than nine minutes into the second half, including a hat trick registered by freshman Ashley Henderson. Alyssa Tomassi (Macomb, Mich. / Eisenhower) came alive for Northwood to score her first two goals of the season with just under 20 minutes remaining in the match. Deanna Martin (Everett, Mich. / Everett) and Misner registered the assists to reduce the lead to 5-3, where it would remain.
For the match, Saginaw Valley maintained the advantage in shots 19-10, as well as edging NU in corner kicks 6-2 (including the six in the second half).
Northwood will host a pair of conference matches next weekend to close out the regular season. They will start with Tiffin on Thursday (October 31) with a start time of 2 p.m. and then will take on Findlay on Saturday (November 2). Match time is set for 12 p.m.
