COLUMBUS, OHIO – The Northwood University volleyball team dropped a 3-1 match at Ohio Dominican Friday night (October 3). Set scores were 30-28, 23-25, 25-18, 25-19.
Northwood is now 5-7 overall, 2-6 in the GLIAC. Ohio Dominican stands at 7-7, 5-3 in the GLIAC.
The opening set saw the Timberwolves get off to a slow start, as the Panthers scored six of the first seven points of the match. But Northwood fought back, tying the score 11-11. The remainder of the set was extremely close, as neither team led by more than two points the rest of the way. NU fought off three set points while ODU held off a pair of set points. The Panthers scored the final three points of the set to win 30-28. Neither team's offense was sharp in the set – ODU hit .068 (11-8-44) while Northwood finished at .034 (15-13059).
After a back-and-forth start to the second set, ODU opened up a 14-10 lead when the Timberwolves fought back. Northwood took the lead at 18-17 and then finished the set strong. Northwood trailed 23-22 but came back to score the final three points to level the match at one set apiece. NU's offense was much better in the second set, hitting .256 (15-5-39). Ohio Dominican hit .194 in the frame (11-4-36).
ODU scored the final five points of the third to break open what was a tight third set. Prior to the ODU run, neither team led by more than three points in the third. The Panthers hit .250 in the set (14-5-36) while the Timberwolves finished at .029 (8-7-35).
A small 3-0 Ohio Dominican run in the middle of the fourth set gave the Panthers a 16-12 lead, which the Timberwolves did not recover from. Northwood got no closer than three points the rest of the way, while ODU scored five of the final seven points to close out the match. Ohio Dominican had their best offensive set of the match in the fourth, finishing at .342 (16-3-38) while Northwood hit .147 (11-6-34).
For the match, Northwood hit .108, finishing with 49 kills and 21 errors on 167 attacks. Ohio Dominican finished at .208 (52-20-154). The Panthers finished with a 12.0 blocks compared to 7.0 for the Timberwolves, while ODU held a 71-69 edge in digs.
Freshman Allison Getty (Wayland, Mich.) led the way for Northwood with a match-high 16 kills. She also had eight digs and two blocks. Junior Meghan Cleary (Howell, Mich./Farmington Hills Mercy) added 10 kills, while freshman Hailey Jones (Ada, Mich./Forest Hills Northern) had a career-high 43 assists.
Northwood will travel to Tiffin Saturday afternoon (October 4). First serve is set for 2 p.m.
