CANTON, OHIO – The Northwood University baseball dropped an 8-3 contest at Walsh Tuesday afternoon (April 2).
The victory for the Cavaliers completed a three-game series sweep over the Timberwolves. Northwood is now 10-12 overall, 3-6 in the GLIAC. Walsh improves to 13-15 overall, 5-5 in the GLIAC.
As they did the entire series, Walsh set the tone for the game in the first inning by plating three runs. The Cavaliers scored at least three runs in the first inning of all three games of the series, registering three, four, and three runs, respectively.
The score remained 1-0 until the top of the fourth inning when Northwood got on the board. After two hits and a Walsh error, Zac Zoellner (Traverse City, Mich./TC Central) drove in NU's first run of the day on a groundout that plated Travis Smith (Clare, Mich.).
Walsh extended their lead in the bottom of the seventh with three runs to make the score 6-2. Northwood bounced back in the top of the eighth, scoring a pair to make it 6-4. Daniel Pulver (Mt. Pleasant, Mich.) had an RBI single, which was followed by an Eric Altman (West Bloomfield, Mich./St. Clair CC) sacrifice fly. However, Walsh came right back with two runs of their own in the bottom of the inning to put the game away.
Northwood finished the game with a 10-9 advantage in hits, but Walsh drew a total of five walks compared to zero for the Timberwolves.
The Timberwolves will travel to Wayne State for a weekend series Saturday and Sunday (April 5-6). First pitch on Saturday is set for 1 p.m.
