The Northwood University baseball team dropped a pair of games at Wayne State Saturday afternoon (April 5).
Northwood is now 10-14 overall, 3-8 in the GLIAC. Wayne State is now 18-9 overall, 7-5 in the GLIAC.
The Warriors were in control of game one from the start, scoring at least one run in all six innings. WSU was up 8-0 in the fifth inning when Northwood plated three runs. Tyler Beatty (Clare, Mich./Davenport) and Daniel Pulver (Mt. Pleasant, Mich.) had RBI singles in the inning, while Beatty scored on an error to make the score 8-3. Trailing 11-3 in the seventh, Northwood scored the final run of the game on an RBI groundout by Eric Altman (West Bloomfield, Mich./St. Clair CC). Pulver led the way for the Timberwolves, finishing with three hits in four at-bats.
Wayne State jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the fourth inning of game two when the Timberwolves mounted a comeback, plating four runs to tie the game. Cody Rogers (Saginaw, Mich./Swan Valley) drove in a run on a groundout, which was followed by a two-run single by Pulver. Travis Smith (Clare, Mich.) then tied the game on a single that plated Pulver. The score remained 4-4 until the Warriors earned the walk-off win in the bottom of the eighth on a two-out single. Smith finished with two hits, while Pulver drove in two runs. Jordan Schwellenbach (Saginaw, Mich./Heritage) took the loss despite allowing just one run in 4 1/3 innings of work.
Northwood and Wayne State will finish their weekend series with a single game Sunday (April 6). First pitch is set for Noon.
