MIDLAND, MICH. – The Northwood University baseball team completed a weekend series sweep over Malone Sunday afternoon (April 27) with a 5-2 win.
Northwood won all three games in the series to improve to 16-23 overall, 8-17 in the GLIAC. Malone falls to 17-28 overall, 12-17 in the GLIAC.
Malone got on the board in the second inning on a solo home run and then followed with a run in the third to go up 2-0. But it was all Northwood the rest of the way. NU cut the lead in half in the third on a Cody Rogers (Saginaw, Mich./Swan Valley) RBI single that scored Andrew Fleming (Olivet, Mich./Kellogg CC). Two innings later, Zyke Bailey (Taylor, Mich./HS Truman) tied the game with a clutch two-out single that scored Rogers.
The score remained tied until the seventh when Rogers came up with the biggest hit of the game. His double down the left field line scored Justin Zyvon (Sterling Heights, Mich./Macomb CC) and Fleming and put Northwood on top for good 4-2. Dustin Lee (Mt. Pleasant, Mich.) added an insurance run in the eighth on a double that plated Tyler Beatty (Clare, Mich./Davenport).
Rogers finished the game 3-4 with three RBIs to lead the Northwood offense. Fleming scored two runs as well.
Senior pitcher Matt Theiss (Midland, Mich.) turned in his best pitching performance at Northwood in his final home start. He tossed a complete game, allowing two runs on five hits in nine innings pitched. Theiss needed 101 pitches in the game and gave up just one hit over the final six innings.
Northwood will finish the home portion of their schedule with a single game against Grand Valley Monday afternoon (April 27). First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
