Baseball Drops Pair At Grand Valley State

ALLENDALE, MICH. – The Northwood University baseball team dropped a pair of games Wednesday afternoon at Grand Valley State. GVSU won game one 10-5 before posting a 7-3 win in game two.

Northwood is now 16-26 overall, 8-20 in the GLIAC. Grand Valley State stands at 30-11 overall, 21-6.

The Lakers offense was consistent from the start of game one, scoring at least one run in all six innings they went to the plate. Northwood got on the board in the third inning on RBIs by Andrew Fleming (Olivet, Mich./Kellogg CC) and Cody Rogers (Saginaw, Mich./Swan Valley) to cut the GVSU advantage to 3-2. Later, trailing 5-2, Dustin Lee (Mt. Pleasant, Mich.) had a sacrifice fly to get NU within two runs. Northwood also got an sac fly from Larsen Cronkright (Midland, Mich./Kellogg CC) in the fifth, making the score 6-4. The Timberwolves final run in the game came on a successful double steal, with Fleming scoring in the sixth to get Northwood back to within two at 7-5. But the Lakers plated three in the bottom of the inning to put the game away. Five different Timberwolves had one hit each, while four different players had RBIs.

Northwood fell behind 2-0 heading into the fourth inning of game two, but responded with a three-run frame to take the lead. Lee had a two-run single to tie the game, which was followed by a sac fly by Justin Zyvon (Sterling Heights, Mich. / Macomb CC) to put Northwood on top 3-2. GVSU responded right away with a big fourth inning of their own, scoring five runs to retake the lead 7-3 neither team would score again the rest of the way. Zyvon finished the game 2-2 with an RBI, while Lee added a hit, a walk and two RBIs.

The Timberwolves will finish their season with a series at Findlay this Saturday and Sunday (May 3-4). Saturday's doubleheader will get under way at 1 p.m.
