Baseball Posts Sweep Over Hillsdale
MIDLAND, MICH. – The Northwood University baseball team extended its winning streak to seven games with a doubleheader sweep over Hillsdale Saturday afternoon (April 4). NU earned a 3-2 win in game one before earning a dramatic 6-5 come-from-behind win in game two.
The wins completed a four-game series sweep for the Timberwolves over the Chargers. NU is now 16-12 overall, 9-3 in the GLIAC. Northwood now owns a two game lead in the GLIAC North Division over Grand Valley State (7-5 GLIAC). Hillsdale falls to 8-20 overall, 3-9 in the GLIAC.
Northwood posted single runs in the first and third innings to open up a 2-0 lead in game one. Hillsdale got a run in the fourth, but the Timberwolves responded with an insurance run in the sixth to make the score 3-1. Hillsdale got a run in the seventh and had the tying run on base but the Timberwolves shut the door to earn the win.
Northwood out-hit Hillsdale 6-4 for the game. The Timberwolves overcame three errors which led to a pair of unearned runs for the Chargers.
Dylan Trimarchi (Pasadena, Calif./Glendale CC) had two hits, an RBI and a run scored to lead the Northwood offense. Nick Barrientos (Zionsville, Ind./Danville Area CC) went 1-3 with a run and an RBI. Logan Meadors (Oxnard, Calif./Midland Univ.) tossed a complete game to earn his third win of the season. He allowed four hits and two unearned runs in seven innings.
After both teams scored a run in the first inning of game two, it appeared Hillsdale was on their way to salvaging the final game of the series. The Chargers scored one in the fourth, two in the sixth and one in the seventh to open up a 5-1 lead heading to the eighth inning. With two outs in the bottom of the eighth, NU began its comeback. Wayne Moak (Marysville, Mich.) had a two-run single to make the score 5-3, which was followed by a Zyke Bailey (Taylor, Mich./H.S. Truman) pinch-hit two-run single to tie the game.
Northwood then capped the comeback in the ninth inning. The Timberwolves loaded the bases with one out and earned the win on a Trimarchi RBI single to plate Daniel Pulver (Mt. Pleasant, Mich.).
Hillsdale out-hit Northwood 15-11 for the game. The Timberwolves drew five walks while not walking any Chargers.
Moak finished the game 3-3 with two RBIs and a runs to lead the Northwood offense. Pulver finished 2-4 with three runs scored scored. Jake Semak (Livonia, Mich./Stevenson) came out of the pen to pick up the win, not allowing a base runner over the final 1 1/3 innings.
The Timberwolves will host Grand Valley State Wednesday afternoon (April 8). The doubleheader will get under way at 2 p.m.
