Travis Smith Named CoSIDA First Team Academic All-District
Capital One Academic All-District Baseball Teams
MIDLAND, MICH. – Travis Smith (Clare, Mich.), a senior designated hitter for the Northwood University baseball team, as earned Capital One Academic All-District honors from the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
To be eligible for Academic All-America consideration, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative G.P.A. of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director. Since the program's inception in 1952, CoSIDA has bestowed Academic All-America honors on more than 20,000 student-athletes in Divisions I, II, III and NAIA, covering all NCAA championship sports.
By earning All-District honors, Smith will now appear on the national ballot, which determines the Capital One Academic All-America team.
Smith has been Northwood's top offensive player over the past two seasons. This year, Smith leads the team in doubles (13), home runs (five), triples (two), RBIs (33) and walks (35). He also ranks second on the team in on-base percentage (.424) and slugging (.491). Last year, Smith earned First Team All-Region honors from the American Baseball Coaches Association after batting .376 with a .551 slugging percentage.
Smith was a key part of a breakthrough season for Northwood baseball in 2015. The Timberwolves set a school record for GLIAC wins (20) and earned the No. 3 seed for the conference tournament. NU will take on No. 4 seed Ohio Dominican Thursday afternoon (May 7) at 5:30 p.m.
