Travis Smith Earns GLIAC Commissioner's Award
2015 Spring GLIAC Commissioner's Award Winners
MIDLAND, MICH. – Travis Smith (Clare, Mich.), a senior designated hitter on the Northwood University baseball team, was named a recipient of a GLIAC Commissioner's Award.
The awards are presented after the Fall, Winter, and Spring athletic seasons to six female and six male student-athletes that excel both in the classroom and on the fields of play. All grade-point averages are based on a 4.0 scale.
Smith earned Second Team CoSIDA Academic All-American honors earlier this spring. He is the first All-American in baseball at Northwood of any kind since Bill Gorski in 1983. Smith is also just the fourth baseball All-American in school history, joining Gorski, Jack Champagne (1979) and Dave Schaeffer (1982).
Over the past two seasons, Smith was Northwood's top offensive player. This year, Smith lead the team in doubles (15), home runs (five), triples (two), RBIs (33) and walks (36). He also ranks second on the team in on-base percentage (.424) and slugging (.491). For the year, Smith ranked in the top 10 in the GLIAC in seven different offensive categories. Last year, he earned First Team All-Region honors from the American Baseball Coaches Association after batting .376 with a .551 slugging percentage.
Smith was a key part of a breakthrough season for Northwood baseball in 2015. The Timberwolves set a school record for GLIAC wins (20) and earned the No. 3 seed for the conference tournament.
A finance major, Smith recently graduated from Northwood with a 3.75 GPA.
