MIDLAND, MICH. – The Northwood University baseball team split a pair of Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Athletic Conference (GLIAC) contests Saturday afternoon (April 16) against Ohio Dominican. ODU earned a 13-3 win in game one before NU earned a dramatic 6-5 win in game two.
The games were the home openers for Northwood. The Timberwolves are now 15-15 overall, 5-7 in the GLIAC. Ohio Dominican stand at 13-18-1 overall, 1-14 in the GLIAC.
The Panthers offense came to play in game one, which was a seven-inning contest. ODU scored at least one run in each inning of the game. A pair of runs by Northwood in the fourth inning cut the Panther lead down to 6-3 heading to the fifth. But the Panthers scored one in the fifth, five in the sixth and two in the seventh to close out the win.
For the game, ODU out-hit NU 15-6 and held a 6-2 edge in walks. Northwood also committed four errors in the contest.
Ohio Dominican got the early lead in game two with a pair of runs in the top of the first inning. Northwood responded with a pair in the fourth to tie the score. Both teams scored one runs in the middle innings (ODU – sixth, NU 7) to send the game to the eighth tied 3-3. The Panthers then got a two-out, two-run single in the eighth to go up 5-3 heading to the ninth.
Northwood was down to their final batter in the ninth inning, as the team had the bases loaded and two outs. O'Neil came up big for the Timberwolves, slicing a line-drive down the right field line that plated all three runners and give NU a dramatic comeback win.
NU ended up with a 7-6 edge in hits. Northwood also saw the ball better at the plate in the nightcap, drawing seven walks.
O'Neil ended up with three RBIs and a run scored in the game. Foley went 2-5 with two RBIs and a run scored. Ian Dimitrie (Madison Heights, Mich./Lamphere) tossed a scoreless ninth inning to pick up his first win of the season.
The two teams will wrap up their weekend series Sunday with a doubleheader.
