GRAND RAPIDS, MICH. – Northwood University guard Ja'Kavien Lewis (Flint, Mich./Carman-Ainsworth) has been named the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Freshman of the Year, the league announced Friday evening (March 8).
Lewis also was named Second Team All-GLIAC. Junior guard Trey McBride (Cincinnati, Ohio/Moeller) earned All-GLIAC Defensive team as well.
Lewis was a key player for Northwood from day one, finishing his first season as a Timberwolf leading the GLIAC in assists (178) and assists per game (6.1) during his first collegiate season. The Flint, Mich., native finished the year also averaging 12.3 points and 4.1 rebounds. His 178 assists this season rank second on the Northwood single-season list. Lewis dished out at least eight assists 11 times this season. Lewis is the second Northwood player to win GLIAC Freshman of the Year, joining Aaron Simpson (2006).
McBride earned All-Defensive team honors for the second straight season. He ranked seventh in the league in steals (49), 14th in blocks (20) and 13th in total rebounds (171). McBride also improved his numbers offensively as well this year, averaging 13.9 points while shooting 49.4 percent from the floor.
Northwood ended the regular season going 12-17 overall, 9-11 in the GLIAC. The Timberwolves made the GLIAC Tournament for the first time since 2015, nearly upsetting No. 1 seed Davenport in the opening round (85-84).
