Golf Teams Earn Academic Honors

Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholars

MIDLAND, MICH. – Numerous members of the Northwood University golf programs have been recognized for their academic achievements.

On the men's side, senior Matt Benson (Grand Ledge, Mich.) and junior Matt Garland (Battle Creek, Mich./Lakeview) were named to the Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholars by the Golf Coaches Association of America. To be eligible for Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholar status an individual must be a junior or senior academically, compete in at least three full years at the collegiate level, participate in 50-percent of his team's competitive rounds, have a stroke-average under 78.0 in Division II and maintain a minimum cumulative career grade-point average of 3.2.

Northwood was also represented by Kasey Harter (Millport, N.Y./Gannon), Monica Gabriele (Missassuga, Ont./St. Joseph) and Marlies Klekner-Alt (Ottawa, Ont./E'Cole),who were named Women's Golf Coaches Association All-American Scholars. The criteria for selection to the All-American Scholar Team are to maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.50.

Both teams had strong 2015-16 seasons. The women's team placed fourth in the GLIAC and finished the season seventh at the NCAA Super Regionals. The men finished third in the GLIAC and also reached the NCAA Super Regionals. Northwood was one of just five schools in the Midwest region to have both their men's and women's teams reach the Super Regionals (Grand Valley State, Indianapolis, Lewis, Missouri-St. Louis.
