Bio

Doug Carter is the head coach for the men's soccer program at Northwood. He has been the men's head coach since the inception of the program in 2001.

Over a combined 28 years as the head coach of the men's and women's programs at Northwood, Carter won 239 games.

Carter finished the 2017 season with his men's record standing at 148-119-20. He has been named the Great Lakes Region Coach of the Year in 2003 and the GLIAC Coach of the Year in 2004. Carter also guided the program to the first-ever GLIAC Tournament Championship match in 2007 and the first trip to the NCAA Tournament in 2012. Northwood is the only men's soccer team in the GLIAC to reach the conference tournament every year the event has been held.

Over the past four years, Northwood has reached a new level of success. The Timberwolves have gone 53-14-8 overall, 41-9-7 in the GLIAC. NU has won two GLIAC Championships (2015, 2017) and two GLIAC Tournament Championships (2014, 2015). NU finished both the 2014 and 2015 season nationally ranked, the only times that has been accomplished in program history.

Northwood had the best season in school history in 2015, winning the GLIAC and the GLIAC Tournament en route to the NCAA Midwest Regional Championship match. The Timberwolves ended the year with a 17-2-1 overall record and was ranked No. 10 nationally.

The 2014 campaign was one of the most memorable in school history, as the Timberwolves claimed the first championship of any kind in program history. NU won the GLIAC Tournament with a 1-0 victory over rival Saginaw Valley State. Northwood earned the No. 2 seed in the Midwest Region of the NCAA Tournament and hosted a game in the event for the first time. Northwood finished the year ranked No. 25 nationally, marking the first time the team ended the year ranked.

Carter also served as the women's head coach from 1998-2010. His record with the women's team was 91-127-11.

He began his career with the Timberwolves in 1997 as an assistant coach. Following that season, the England native replaced Ron Hebert, who started the women's soccer program at Northwood in 1994

Prior to coming to Northwood, Carter was an assistant coach at Saginaw Valley State University for one season. Since 1996, he has been strongly involved in area youth soccer as well. He is the former Director of Soccer for the Saginaw Township Soccer Association and was a Coaching Professional for the same organization.

Carter played collegiate soccer for the University of Surrey in England. He started all three seasons and was team captain for two of those campaigns. He also played 11 seasons for the Civil Service Football Club in London.

In 1992, Carter graduated from the University of Surrey with Bachelor of Science degrees in Psychology and Sports Studies. The Ashley resident is married to Kelly, and they have two sons, Liam and Ethan.
