The Northwood University softball team earned a doubleheader sweep at Tiffin Thursday afternoon (April 18). Northwood earned a 10-4 win in game one before posting a 4-3 victory in game two.
Northwood is now 21-14 overall, 11-5 in the GLIAC. Tiffin stands at 14-21 overall, 8-8 in the GLIAC.
The Timberwolves got off to a strong start in game one, plating eight runs in the first three innings. Northwood scored three in the first inning, thanks to RBI hits by Jessica Tostrud (Kenosha, Wisc./Mary D. Bradford), Sam Zaborowski (Taylor, Mich./Cabrini) and Lindsey Obremski (Williamsburg, Va./Dubois Area). After the Dragons plated a run in the first, the Timberwolves responded with four runs in the top of the second. Rachel Hammer (Commerce, Mich./Lakeland) had a two-run single, which was immediately followed by Zaborowski's fifth home run of the season. Northwood later added single runs in the third, sixth and seventh innings to put the game away. Zaborowski went 4-4 with a home run, four RBI's and two runs scored in the contest. Klonowski, Tostrud and Hammer each had two hits and at least one RBI as well. Maddison Sebald (Bay City, Mich./Western) scattered 12 hits over seven innings to earn her 11th win of the season.
Tiffin plated an unearned run in the second inning to take the early lead in game two, but the Timberwolves responded in the third with a single run. NU then took the lead in the fourth on a two-out single by Natalie Lampman (Madison Heights, Mich./Bishop Foley) which eventually plated two runs. The Timberwolves made it 4-1 in the fifth thanks to scoring on a passed ball. Freshman pitcher Casey Brown (Hudson, Ohio) made that hold up, despite a rally by the Dragons in the seventh. Tiffin scored a pair in the final inning to cut the lead to 4-3, but Brown worked her way out of it to earn the complete game win. She allowed two earned runs while striking out five.
Northwood will host Lake Superior State Saturday afternoon (April 20). The doubleheader gets under way at 1 p.m.
