Softball Splits With Ohio Dominican
The Northwood University softball team split a doubleheader against Ohio Dominican Wednesday night (April 16). The Timberwolves won game one 6-4 before falling in the final inning 7-6 in game two.
Northwood is now 20-12 overall, 11-5 in the GLIAC. Ohio Dominican stands at 19-23 overall, 15-3 in the GLIAC.
In game one, Northwood got on the board in the first inning thanks to a squeeze bunt by Sam Zaborowski (Taylor, Mich./Cabrini). Later in the inning, NU then made it 2-0 on a fielding error.
The score remained 2-0 until the third inning, when the Panthers took the lead on one swing. Allie Hinton's grand slam put Ohio Dominican on top 4-2. Northwood responded right away in the bottom of the inning, plating three runs to earn the lead back. Lindsay Obremski (DuBois, Pa.) had an RBI double to make the score 4-3, followed by NU scoring on an ODU error. With the score tied, Malinda Smith (Saginaw, Mich./Swan Valley) had an RBI single to shortstop which plated Zaborowski and put the Timberwolves back on top 5-4. Northwood finished the scoring in the sixth inning, as Smith scored on a passed ball.
Hayley D'Avilar (Georgetown, Ont./Christ the King) went 2-4 with two runs scored to lead the Northwood offense. Smith added two hits, a run scored and an RBI. Maddison Sebald (Bay City, Mich./Western) improved to 10-4 with the win, while Casey Brown (Hudson, Ohio) picked up her second save by shutting out the Panthers in the final three innings.
In game two, Northwood got on the board in the first inning once again on an RBI single by Zaborowski. ODU responded with a run in the second and three in the third to open up a 4-1 lead.
Trailing 4-1 in the fourth inning, the Timberwolves used one big swing to tie the game. Senior third baseman Natalie Lampman (Madison Heights, Mich./Bishop Foley) hit a three-run homer to tie the game 4-4. The homer was Lampman's sixth of the season, tying her for the team lead with Zaborowski.
The score remained tied until the seventh inning when both teams came up with big hits. The Timberwolves got an RBI single by Obremski in the top of the inning to go up 5-4, which was followed by a bases-loaded walk by Jessica Tostrud (Kenosha, Wisc./Mary D. Bradford) to send the game to the bottom of the inning with NU leading by two. But ODU responded with a big final inning to earn the comeback win. After the leadoff hitter was retired, the Panthers registered four hits and a walk to plate three runs and earn the win.
Obremski had two hits and an RBI, while Lynn scored two runs. Lampman added three RBIs.
Northwood will host Lake Superior State Friday afternoon (April 18). First pitch of the doubleheader is set for 1 p.m.
