MIDLAND, MICH. – The Northwood University softball team falls 9-3 and 5-4 to Tiffin on Friday afternoon (April 22).
The Timberwolves drop to 16-22 overall, 7-15 in the GLIAC. The Dragons improve to , 7-13 in the GLIAC.
Tiffin scored five runs in the first and four in the second to get out to an early 9-0 advantage. NU's Andria Gietl (Plymouth, Mich. / Ladywood) hit a single to right, scoring Hayley D'Avilar (Georgetown, Ont./Christ the King Catholic Secondary) and Marissa Tiano (Warren, Mich. / Regina) in the third. With Gietl on third, Karli Godlewski (Shelby Township, Mich. / Lutheran North) hit an RBI-single to left center to score Gietl and cut the lead 9-3. Neither team was able to plate another run for the remainder of the game.
Despite out-hitting the Dragons 8-5, NU left 11 runners on base. Tiano finished 2-for-3 with a run scored, while Gietl went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI's and scoring a run.
In game two, TU plated one in the second and third before Northwood scored three runs on three hits in the fourth. Jennifer Wontorcik (Midland, Mich. / Midland) connected on a shot to center field to score Hayley D'Avilar (Georgetown, Ont./Christ the King Catholic Secondary) before Godlewski plated Andria Gietl (Plymouth, Mich. / Ladywood). Meghan Franz (Toledo, Ohio / Whitmer) followed that with a double to right center scoring Caitlin Richardson (Midland, Mich. / Bullock Creek) from second for a 3-2 lead. Tiffin responded with a run in the fifth to tie the game. Both teams scored again in the sixth but the Timberwolves were unable to score in the seventh and the Dragons won with a walk-off RBI.
TU out-hit NU (9-6) in game two. Franz finished with a pair of hits and an RBI, while Wontorcik and Godlewski each added an RBI.
The Timberwolves host senior day against Ohio Dominican on Saturday at 1 p.m. Northwood then closes out the regular season against Ashland on Sunday at Noon.
