RECAP: Third-seeded Northwood advanced to the NCAA Midwest Regional Tournament final with a 60-49 win over No. 7 seed Missouri-St. Louis 60-49 Saturday night (March 14).

GAME STORY

  • Northwood scored the first four points of the game and held the lead the rest of the game.
  • NU led by as many as six in the first point holding a 13-8 lead after one.
  • The Timberwolves took their first double-digit lead of the game at 25-14.
  • With the score 29-19 late in the half, Northwood finished the second on a 10-0 run to take a 39-19 lead at the break.
  • UMSO responded with a strong start to the second half, scoring the first 10 points of the third to get within 10.
  • Northwood netted the final four points of the third to take a 51-38 lead heading to the fourth.
  • The Tritons battled in the fourth but got no closer than eight points before the Timberwolves closed out the 11-point victory.

NORTHWOOD NOTES

  • Northwood was 0-2 in the NCAA Tournament in program history entering this season, having lost opening round games in 2009 and 2021. NU has now won NCAA Tournament games on back-to-back nights.
  • The win advances Northwood to the round of 16 in the tournament for the first time in program history.
  • The Timberwolves' 28th win extended the program record for victories in a season. The 2008-09 team won 21 games for the old record.
  • Northwood also extends school record for longest winning streak with their 18th straight win today. The old record was set in 1990-91 (10).
  • In their two tournament wins, Northwood has led for a combined 72 of a possible 80 minutes (33:08 vs. Malone, 38:52 vs. UMSL). Malone (2:00) and UMSL (0:00) have led for a total of two minutes.
  • In UMSL's upset win over No. 2 seed Ferris State Friday night, the Tritons went 12-24 from 3-point range, which included a 6-8 clip in the fourth quarter. Northwood held the Tritons to 3-20 from 3-point range overall, 0-6 in the fourth quarter.
