Volleyball Falls 3-0 At Ferris State
The Northwood University volleyball team opened GLIAC play with a 3-0 loss at Ferris State Friday night (September 20). Set scores were 25-21, 25-21, 25-18.
Northwood is now 5-4 overall, 0-1 in the GLIAC. Ferris State improves to 6-3 overall, 1-0 in the GLIAC.
The Bulldogs came out strong in the opening set, scoring nine of the first 11 points of the match. Northwood chipped away at the lead the rest of the set, eventually getting within two points late at 23-21. But the Bulldogs scored the final two points to earn a 1-0 lead. The two teams featured similar attack numbers in the opening set – Northwood hit .152 (12-5-46) while Ferris State finished at .143 (12-6-42).
The second set proved to be very similar to the opening frame. Once again, FSU got off to a fast start, leading 8-2. Northwood came back to get within two points four times in the set, but could not get any closer. Both teams hit better in the second set – Northwood finished at .213 (15-5-47) while FSU hit .200 (12-4-40).
It was Northwood who got off to fast start in the third set, leading 6-2 and 10-5. But the Bulldogs went on a big run, scoring 11 of 13 points to turn a five point hole into a 16-12 lead. Northwood came back to get within one at 16-15, but FSU responded with seven of the next nine points to put the match away. NU's offense, which committed 10 errors in the first two sets combined, had 10 errors in the final set alone (13-10-37).
For the match, Northwood finished with six more kills than Ferris State (40-34) and one just one fewer dig than the Bulldogs (63-62). Serving proved to be the key to the match. Northwood had five aces to go along with nine service errors, while Ferris State finished with nine aces and just one error.
Juliia Pakhomenko (Donetsk, Ukraine) led the way for Northwood, finishing with a match-high 17 kills on 43 attempts, good for a .302 attack percentage. She also shared match-high honors with 19 digs.
Northwood travels to Grand Valley State Saturday (September 21). Match time is set for 4 p.m.
