Volleyball Earns 3-0 Road Win Over Tiffin

The Northwood University volleyball team earned a 3-0 road victory over Tiffin Friday night (September 27).  Set scores were 25-19, 25-21, 25-20.

Northwood improves to 6-5 overall, 1-2 in the GLIAC. Tiffin falls to 5-2 overall, 1-2 in the GLIAC.

In the opening set, Northwood led 14-13 when the Timberwolves took control.  NU scored five of the next seven points to go up 19-15. Tiffin got no closer than three points the rest of the way. Northwood hit .238 in the set (15-5-42) while the Dragons finished at .118 (12-8-34).

The second set saw the Timberwolves take control late. With NU leading 20-19, Northwood scored five of the final seven points to earn a 2-0 lead. Neither team hit particularly well in the frame – NU finished at .160 (13-5-50) while Tiffin hit .093 (14-10-43).

The final set had major momentum swings in both directions.  The Timberwolves jumped out to a 10-3 lead, thanks to a 6-0 run.  But Tiffin eventually responded with a 6-0 run of their own to make the score 13-10.  Tiffin cut the lead to 16-14 when the Timberwolves put the match away.  Northwood once again registered five of the next seven points.  The Dragons go no closer than two points the rest of the way.  NU finished the third set hitting .250 (10-4-24) while Tiffin had a -.040 mark (7-8-25).

For the match, Northwood finished with a .207 attack percentage (38-14-116) while Tiffin hit .069 (33-26-102). Tiffin held a 57-38 advantage in digs for the match, while Northwood finished with a 7-6 edge in blocks.  Both teams had five aces.

Leading the way for Northwood was senior outside hitter Juliia Pakhomenko (Donetsk, Ukraine).  She finished with 17 kills on 39 attempts (.333) to go along with five digs and two aces.  The Timberwolves got strong production out of their middle blockers - Kristin Perschon (Schaumburg, Ill./Conant) had eight kills and just one error on 16 swings (.438) while Cassandra Marsh (Maumee, Ohio) had seven kills and zero errors on 17 swings (.412).  Both players had three blocks.

Northwood will travel to Ohio Dominican Saturday afternoon (September 28). Match time is set for 5 p.m.
