Volleyball Sweeps Lake Superior State 3-0

MIDLAND, MICH. – The Northwood University volleyball team picked up their first Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference win Tuesday night (September 23). Set scores were 25-15, 25-20, 25-14).

Northwood improves to 4-5 overall, 1-4 in the GLIAC. Lake Superior State falls to 1-9 overall, 0-5 in the GLIAC.

It was the Timberwolves' offense that was the key to the victory, starting in the first set. NU scored six of the final eight points to earn a 25-15 win in the opening frame, thanks to hitting .444 (18-2-36). Lake Superior State hit .030 in the set (6-5-33).

LSSU led for a large portion of the second set, eventually going up 18-14. But Northwood went on a big run at that point, scoring seven straight points to go up 22-18 on their way to a 25-20 win and a 2-0 lead. NU hit .256 in the second set (16-5-43), compared to .143 for LSSU (8-4-28).

Northwood scored seven of the first eight points to take control of the third set. LSSU got no closer than five points the rest of the set while the Timberwolves led by as many as 11 points.  Northwood hit .353 in the final set (.353) while holding the Lakers to a .000 mark (6-6-26).

For the match, Northwood hit .345 (50-11-113) overall while Lake Superior State finished at .057 (20-15-87). LSSU finished with a 48-46 edge in digs, while Northwood out-blocked the Lakers 4-0.

Three Timberwolves finished in with double-figure kill totals, led by freshman Allison Getty (Wayland, Mich.). She finished with 14 kills and eight digs while hitting .414. Krysta Kramer (Lansing, Mich./Grand Ledge) had 12 kills and seven digs with a .458 attack percentage. Junior Chelsea Watson (Bowling Green, Ohio/Niagara U.) added 10 kills and three blocks.

Northwood will host Lake Erie Friday night (September 26). First serve is set for 7 p.m.
