Volleyball Claims 3-1 Win Over Lake Erie
MIDLAND, MICH. – The Northwood University volleyball team picked up a 3-1 win over Lake Erie Friday night (September 26). Set scores were 22-25, 25-17, 25-19, 25-21.
Northwood earns its second straight win to improve to 4-5 overall, 2-4 in the GLIAC. Lake Erie falls to 2-9 overall, 0-6 in the GLIAC.
Both teams were sloppy in the first set, combining for 18 attack errors. The Storm led 20-15 late, but the Timberwolves fought back to cut the lead to 21-20. The Storm responded by scoring three straight points to put the set out of reach. Lake Erie hit .024 in the set (11-10-41), while Northwood hit .029 (9-8-35).
Northwood was much more efficient offensively in the second set, hitting .345 (12-2-29) while holding the Storm to a -.077 mark (6-8-26). With the score 9-9, Northwood scored 10 of the next 13 points to break the set open.
Errors proved to the story of the third set, as Lake Erie finished with 10 attack errors while Northwood had nine. The key to the set was the run by the Timberwolves with Northwood leading 14-13. NU registered nine of the next 11 points to go up 23-15 and put the set out of reach.
Lake Erie led 19-16 in the fourth set when Northwood took over. NU scored seven of the eight points and finished the match off by claiming nine of the last 11 points. Both teams hit much more efficiently in the fourth – Northwood hit .467 (18-4-30) while Lake Erie finished at .258 (11-3-31).
For the match, Northwood hit .228 (52-23-127) while Lake Erie finished at .016 (33-31-125). The Timberwolves out-dug the Storm 53-46 and had a 6-3 edge in blocks. Northwood overcame 17 service errors to earn the win.
Krysta Kramer (Lansing, Mich./Grand Ledge) and Allison Getty (Wayland, Mich.) led the way for the Timberwolves. Kramer finished with 15 kills, six digs and three blocks to go with a .281 attack percentage. Getty had 14 kills and a .379 attack percentage. Erin Hoomaian (Novi, Mich.) had a match-high 22 digs, while setters Hailey Jones (Ada, Mich./Farmington Hills Mercy) and Jaclyn Kimmet (Maumee, Ohio/Springfield) had 23 and 22 assists, respectively.
Northwood will host Ashland Saturday (September 27). First serve is set for 5 p.m.
