Volleyball Falls 3-1 At Wayne State

DETROIT, MICH. – The Northwood University volleyball team dropped a 3-1 match at Wayne State Friday night (October 24). Set scores were 19-25, 26-24, 25-20, 26-24.

Wayne State improves to 7-12 overall, 4-8 in the GLIAC. Northwood falls to 6-13 overall, 3-9 in the GLIAC.

Northwood played well in the opening set, hitting .250 (12-3-36) while holding Wayne State to a .118 clip (11-7-34). When the score was 10-10, the Timberwolves scored seven of nine points to take control.

The Timberwolves had a set point in the second, leading 24-23. But the Warriors scored the final three points of the set to win 26-24, leveling the match at 1-1. WSU hit .300 in the set (18-9-30) while holding Northwood to a .190 clip (6-2-21).

A 7-1 WSU run in the third set broke open a close set, putting the Warriors up 17-10. Northwood fought back to get within two at 18-16, but WSU responded with five of the next six points to earn the set. WSU hit .225 in the set (14-5-40) while Northwood finished the third at .108 (10-6-37).

The fourth set was full of runs for both teams. Wayne State opened 15-9 lead, but Northwood responded with a 12-3 run to go up 21-18. Much like the second, the Timberwolves had a set point at 24-23, only to see the Warriors score the final three points to earn the match. NU hit .308 (12-4-26) in the fourth, while Wayne State finished at .143 (13-8-35).

Northwood finished the match with a higher attack percentage than Wayne State (.208-.194), but Wayne State had 16 more kills than the Timberwolves (56-40). Northwood finished with a 9-4 edge blocks while Wayne State held a 56-36 edge in digs.

Chelsea Watson (Bowling Green, Ohio/Niagara U.) led Northwood with nine kills. Marissa Pomaville (Livonia, Mich./Churchill) finished with eight kills, seven blocks and a .300 attack percentage.

Northwood will travel to Saginaw Valley State Saturday (October 25). First serve is set for 2 p.m.
