Volleyball Loses To No. 14 Grand Valley State 3-0

MIDLAND, MICH. – The Northwood University volleyball team dropped a 3-0 match to No. 14 Grand Valley State Friday night (October 31). Set scores were 25-22, 25-13, 26-24.

Northwood falls to 6-15 overall, 3-11 in the GLIAC. GVSU improves to 18-4 overall, 14-1 in the GLIAC.

The Lakers jumped out to an 18-11 lead in the first set, but Northwood chipped away at the lead. NU got the margin down to 23-21 only to see GVSU score two of the final three points to go up 1-0. Neither team hit very well in the set – the Lakers finished at .087 (12-8-46) while the Timberwolves hit .079 (10-7-38).

GVSU dominated the second set from the start, opening up leads of 5-0, 10-2 and 13-3. The Lakers hit an impressive .448 in the set (15-2-29) while Northwood finished at .114 (10-6-35).

The final set was tight for the most part – there were six tied and four lead changes in the set. Northwood had a set point a 24-23, but the Lakers claimed the final three points of the set to earn the match. The Timberwolves finished the set with a higher hitting percentage (.235-.182), but the Lakers held a 3-0 edge in aces in the set.

For the match, GVSU hit .213 overall (39-16-108) while Northwood ended up at .140 (34-19-107). The Timberwolves finished with a 7-3 edge in blocks while GVSU finished with a 46-45 advantage in digs.  Serving was a big part of the match, as Grand Valley State had six aces while Northwood had zero.

Three Timberwolves finished with seven kills, led by Marissa Pomaville (Livonia, Mich./Churchill). She had seven kills and four blocks while hitting .417 (7-2-12).  Allison Getty (Wayland, Mich.) and Chelsea Watson (Bowling Green, Ohio/Niagara U.) each added seven kills as well. Lisa Kisil (Rochester, Mich./Stoney Creek) finished with a match-high 18 digs.

Northwood will host #22 Ferris State Saturday afternoon (November 1). First serve is set for 5 p.m.
