Volleyball Signs Grace Rekeweg and Al’Lesha Roberts To National Letters of Intent

MIDLAND, MICH. – The Northwood University volleyball team has announced the signing of a pair of student-athletes to National Letters of Intent.

Outside hitter Grace Rekeweg (Midland, Mich./Midland) and middle blocker/right side Al'Lesha Roberts (Eastpointe, Mich./Detroit Cass Tech) will join the Timberwolves for the 2018 season.

Rekeweg is a member of the Michigan Elite Volleyball club as well as a star for a Midland High Volleyball team that reached the quarterfinals of the MHSAA Tournament. She earned First Team All-Saginaw Valley League as a junior and Second Team as a sophomore. As a senior, she was named the Maxpreps Michigan Player of the Week and was featured on their senior star list. She is the daughter of Northwood men's basketball coach Jeff Rekeweg.

"I chose Northwood University because it gave me an overall at-home feeling and I really like the idea of being close to home," said G. Rekeweg. "I also really loved the girls on the team and the coaching staff which made me feel very comfortable."

"Grace is a good-sized outside who can terminate from both the front and back rows," said head coach Dave Shumaker. "Most importantly, however, Grace is an intense competitor who brings fire to the court."

Roberts comes to Northwood from the Legends Volleyball club, where she played for Shumaker. She earned All-City honors while playing at Detroit Cass Tech. With Legends, she was a part of a bronze-medal team at the Youth Performance Championships.

"Northwood University has always been one of my top choices because of the great business education I was sure to receive," said Roberts. "Being able to play volleyball as well as get an amazing education is as good as it gets. During my visits, the team and coaches made me feel like family. After that day, I knew Northwood was definitely the place for me."

"Al'Lesha is an extremely athletic Middle/Right Side who is just starting to reach her potential as a player," said Shumaker.  "She is a smart and aggressive blocker who can shut down an opponent's best hitter."

Northwood posted a 14-13 record in the 2017 season.
