Men's Basketball Drops 66-53 Contest At Grand Valley State
ALLENDALE, MICH. – The Northwood University men's basketball team dropped a 66-53 contest at Grand Valley State Saturday night (January 23).
Northwood falls to 10-8 overall, 6-6 in the GLIAC. GVSU improves to 14-4 overall, 8-4 in the GLIAC.
NU came out strong, scoring seven of the first nine points of the game to earn an early five point lead. The Lakers fought back to take the lead, eventually going up 26-21 with less than 1:30 remaining in the half. Northwood finished the half with a big push, scoring eight points in the final 1:21 to take a 29-26 lead at the break. Northwood shot 45.8 percent in the half (11-24) while holding GVSU to a 30.3 percent mark (10-33).
The Timberwolves continued their hot play early in the second half, scoring the first five points to take their biggest lead of the night at 36-28. NU led 48-46 with less than 10 minutes to go in the game when the Lakers took over. GVSU out-scored Northwood 20-5 the rest of the way. The Lakers 13-point lead at the end of the game was their biggest of the night.
For the game, Northwood finished at 34.6 percent from the floor (18-52) compared to Grand Valley State at 35.5 percent (22-62). Rebounding proved to be a big key the game – the Lakers held a 15-5 edge in offensive rebounds which gave them a 14-5 advantage in second chance points.
Three Timberwolves finished in double figures, led by Nick Spitzly (Pewamo, Mich./Pewamo-Westphalia) and Maurice Jones (Saginaw, Mich./Arthur Hill) with 11 each. Dylan Langkabel (Morristown, Ind.) added 10.
Northwood will host Michigan Tech Thursday night (January 28). Game time is set for 8 p.m.
